
Stop the Spark: Why Your Recessed Heaters Need Better Lead-Wire Sealing
If you’ve ever installed a recessed infrared ceiling heater, you know they’re a tight fit. But here’s the problem: the heat doesn’t just push down toward the floor. A lot of it gets trapped up in the ceiling cavity. It turns that space into a pressure cooker for the electrical wires connecting your heating element to the power. The real danger is the “cycle.” Every time the heater kicks on, the temperature at the connection point spikes. If the seal isn’t tight, that heat leaks right back into the wire insulation. Do this enough times and the insulation gets brittle. It cracks. Then you get an arc. Having a short circuit happen inside a ceiling isn’t just a maintenance headache—it’s a fire risk. The problem with “good enough” sealing I see plenty of heaters labeled “commercial grade” that just use a bit of glue or some basic heat-shrink tubing. Honestly? That’s not going to cut it. We do things differently. We use a specialized potting compound and a mechanical seal that creates a total barrier. It keeps oxygen and moisture out of the connection point entirely. By using high-temp ceramics and silicone seals that don’t shrink under pressure, we keep the electrical side of things completely isolated from the heat zone. Your insulation doesn’t burn out because it never feels the heat in the first place. A quick tip on installation There is one trade-off. Because these seals are so robust, the lead-wires are a bit stiffer. Whatever you do, don’t bend them at sharp angles when you’re tucking them into the ceiling. If you force a hard kink, you might crack the seal. Just give the wire a little room to breathe. At the end of the day, if you go with cheap wiring, you’re looking at replacing those units every couple of years. It’s a pain. Doing the sealing right the first time means the electricals will actually last as long as the quartz tube itself. It’s just common sense safety.
