
Keeping Your Bathroom Heaters from Becoming a Hazard
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom sounds great until you remember that bathrooms are basically steam rooms. You’ve got constant humidity and water droplets everywhere, which is a nightmare for electricity. If you want to keep things safe, a cheap plastic cover just isn’t going to cut it. You need a setup that actually blocks the current from wandering where it shouldn’t.
Why moisture is a problem
Here’s the thing: water vapor is sneaky. It finds its way into standard housings, hits the terminals, and creates what we call “tracking.” That’s just a fancy way of saying the electricity is leaking across the insulator. To stop that, we use high-grade ceramics or reinforced silicone gaskets at the ends of the lamps. These materials don’t soak up water. They stay stubborn and keep the electricity locked in, even when the room is thick with steam.
The gear that actually works
We stick with IP65-rated enclosures or better. In my experience, the biggest weak point is usually the seal between the chassis and the connector (like those R7s or Sk15 types). To fix that, we use double-insulated wiring and sealed cable glands. It stops moisture from “wicking” its way back into the junction box. The heating element is tucked inside quartz glass, which is great, but the end-caps are where things get risky. That’s why we add a special moisture-resistant coating to the contact points. It keeps corrosion away and stops short circuits before they start.
The trade-off you need to know about
Nothing is perfect. When you seal everything up tight to keep water out, you trap heat in. If you cram too many high-wattage lamps into a tiny ceiling space, the temperature inside that housing will skyrocket. If your wiring gauge is too thin, the heat will make the resistance climb, and eventually, your insulation will get brittle and crack. It’s a slow burn, but it happens. And please, just use a GFCI. Even with the best insulation in the world, a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter is your ultimate safety net. If something does go wrong, it shuts everything down instantly. Better safe than sorry.
