
Keeping the Heat On: How We Deal With Rain and Fog in Outdoor Heaters
Let’s be honest: putting a heater outside is basically inviting nature to try and break it. Between the rain, the humidity, and the random splashes, moisture is the enemy. If you’ve ever owned a cheap outdoor heater, you know the drill—one bad storm and the thing is a paperweight. We wanted to build something that actually lasts, so we spent a lot of time figuring out how to keep the guts of these heaters dry.
The “Crack” Problem
Here is the scary part about infrared heaters: thermal shock. If a tiny drop of cold rain hits a quartz tube that’s glowing at 600°C, the glass doesn’t just leak—**it shatters.**It’s instant. To stop that, we didn’t just throw a cover on it. We redesigned the whole shape of the housing to act like a shield, pushing rain and spray away from the tube and the electrical bits. And we didn’t stop there. We used high-temp silicone gaskets where the lamp holder meets the chassis. It’s a small detail, but it stops moisture from sneaking into the wiring, which means no short circuits and no rusty pins.
Dealing With the Fog
Then there’s the fog. You know that cloudy film that forms on a window when it’s cold outside? The same thing happens to heater lenses. When that happens, the infrared waves get scattered. You’re paying for the electricity, but you aren’t actually feeling the heat. We fixed this by tweaking the airflow. By letting the unit “breathe” naturally, we keep the lens clear. The result? The heat goes exactly where it’s supposed to—right on you.
The Trade-off
Now, I’ll be straight with you. Adding all these guards and seals makes the heater a bit bulkier. It also narrows the heat beam just a tiny bit compared to a totally naked element. But here’s the reality: you can have a wide beam for one season, or you can have a slightly narrower beam for years. Without this protection, a standard lamp will probably give up the ghost after one heavy winter. With it? The unit takes a beating from the weather and just keeps on humming.
