
Why we put our bathroom heaters through “damp-heat” torture tests
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and the constant threat of a stray spray of water. If you’re looking at an IP65-rated infrared heater, you might think a quick splash test is enough. But here’s the thing—that only tells you if the heater survives day one. It doesn’t tell you if it’ll still be working six months from now when it’s bolted to a ceiling.
The sneaky way moisture gets in
IP65 is great for keeping out dust and water jets. But seals aren’t permanent; they wear down. Think about what happens when the heater kicks in. The element gets scorching hot, while the bathroom air stays cool. This creates a sort of vacuum effect. It literally sucks moist air through the tiniest, microscopic gaps in the gaskets. Once that damp air hits the circuitry or the lamp terminals? That’s when you get corrosion or a short circuit. Not a great look. That’s why we use damp-heat aging tests. We lock these units in a chamber with brutal humidity and heat for hundreds of hours. We’re basically trying to break them. We’d much rather the seals fail in our lab than in your customer’s bathroom.
The battle with heat
When that heating element hits peak temp, it happens in seconds. The housing expands, the seals contract. If the materials don’t play nice together, the seal just… pops. It breaks during the heat-up phase. We spend a lot of time watching for “creep” in the plastic and silicone. If the seal warps even a little bit, the water wins.
Finding the sweet spot
You might think, “Just seal it tighter!” But there’s a catch. If we seal it too tight, the internal pressure builds up. Without a way to breathe, that pressure can actually blow the gasket outward. So, we have to be really careful with the venting and pressure valves. It’s a balancing act. We aren’t going to promise you a “permanent” seal—nobody can. But because of these aging cycles, we can give you a documented lifespan. You get a heater that actually does its job without burning out the second the room gets steamy.
